3 Owen’s commitment to karate Integrity Martial Arts and himself only continues to grow Being accepted onto Demo Team has been a huge boost for him It is also a big responsibility We often have to remind ourselves and others that he is only eight years old Many times things come up that developmentally are hard for him It is a lot of responsibility but he is determined and is really hanging in there Often he is hard on himself when he stumbles However he is getting better at accepting that he is LEARNING how to do things-learning karate learning responsibility learning to remember and be organized Owen is meeting the challenges For his leadership project he decided on organizing a reading program It is a huge project and one that quite honestly his father and I have struggled with how to help him It is not something that he can do on his own we have to be his team and are all determined to keep this Owen’s project Owen has been limited by how much time we are available to help him He could have changed his mind He could have chosen a different project but he has never wavered in his commitment He never considered taking an easier path We have made a lot of progress on the project He has had to scale back quite a bit on his original idea but he has taken it in stride and kept positive I am so proud to see him persevere Additionally I admire and respect the passion he has shown for reading and encouraging others to love reading I wouldn’t say that Owen was a reluctant reader but his current passion for reading was earned
